OTHER NOTES
It's mentioned in one of the official artbooks (?) that Shinjiro was actually pretty cheerful as a kid. Now, I realize that cheerful doesn't necessarily equate to being outgoing, but given that the same artbook says that Aki was a quiet kid, my loose headcanon is that Shinjiro made the first move in approaching Aki/Miki at the orphanage during playtime (or whenever). I've seen a few fics headcanon it the other way but eh, I feel like Aki would have been too busy taking care of Miki to be super concerned with reaching out to other kids.
BUT WHO KNOWS.
After doing some reading, it turns out that kids don't have to have dead parents to be thrown into an orphanage in Japan, but it's mentioned in the artbook that Shinjiro knew the pain of losing a loved one well, and while I used to think that meant Miki I assume it means losing his actual parents too. So I guess both Aki and Shinjiro were parentless? (Though they were both four, how much do you remember of your parents when you're four.....) Aki definitely, since he got adopted later on.
Sidenote: Shinjiro stole a doll for Miki once. Supposedly this was because she had no friends her age and he wanted to make her happy. It's clear from this that he had a very strong nurturing/kind streak even as a kid - willing to risk his own safety/well-being to make someone he loves happy. It also probably shows how much he cared about rules (not a whole hell of a lot) if he thought shoplifting was the proper solution instead of, idk, asking someone. Gonna do his own shit, everyone else be damned. And then Aki punched him for it and he took it like a man.
Related to that: I thought I remembered hearing/reading dialogue where Aki mentioned training because he wanted to be stronger like Shinjiro/something about Shinjiro motivated him to train more. I have no idea if he used to be really physical or not, but he always seemed pretty unwilling to fight, even back when Aki beat him up for the doll. I don't think he likes seeing people get hurt, honestly.
If the drama CDs are canon, apparently Shinjiro didn't like thunder when he was younger and got really tense. But he mentions that he stayed strong for Aki and Miki because they both hated lightning and he didn't want them to stress more. SO HE'S ALWAYS BEEN SURROGATE MOM SHINJI. What a loser.
Artbook mentions that he matured overnight to be the pillar of support Aki needed. Except Aki got adopted like right afterwards so....idk how that works. Can't really support a guy who's not there anymore.
SPEAKING OF FIRE AND ORPHANAGES AND ALL THAT JAZZ - what happened to the kids at the orphanage? did they get moved to a different orphanage? did they just rebuild the old orphanage? did aki ever get to visit the orphanage again? Did Aki and Shinji just see each other in school? Like obviously they went to the same junior high and high school, but what about primary? Is that the only time they talked? Did Aki ever invite Shinji over? Was that even allowed........... I wish this weren't such a blank. 8( PERSONA WHY
Either way I assume Shinjiro was a general nag during school - "do your homework, aki" "are you eating okay aki" "get enough sleep aki". He likely would have asked about adopted life though too, though sometimes I think he may have been a little jealous? Like he's definitely happy that Aki isn't stuck in the orphanage anymore and has a nice family and house and everything, but like Aki had Miki and now Aki has a family (even if adopted) and Shinji's got his only family taken away and it's probably a little depressing for him.
I wonder who mentioned the whole Dark Hour thing first - probably Aki, since he's reputed to be a crybaby - but I do think it's interesting that Mitsuru only approached Aki and everyone was all "uhhh you sure you can control your persona" when Shinjiro was all "bitch let me in". How do you know if someone can control their Persona well or not? Are there physical tests? Was it after they'd gone into Tartarus once or twice? Or is Mitsuru just that good?
Castor doesn't have any weaknesses either, and a Persona is reflective of the user.
god this is so long and I still have more word vomit
