NAME: Shinjiro Aragaki
CANON: Persona 3 FES
CANON POINT: September 4, 2009, shortly after joining SEES; in addition, he is a Duplicity CRAU
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND: http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Shinjiro_Aragaki

Since the wiki isn’t exactly great at sticking all the history bits in one place, I have a short summary of Shinjiro’s life below:

It’s unknown what happened to Shinjiro’s parents but he ended up in an orphanage early on in life, where he met and became close friends with Akihiko Sanada and his younger sister Miki. Unfortunately, when Shinjiro and Akihiko were 8, the orphanage burned down and Miki died in the fire.

Akihiko was adopted immediately following the fire while Shinjiro presumably was moved to a different orphanage. They remained good friends during their adolescent years and attended Gekkoukan Junior High together. During their last year of junior high Akihiko's (and presumably, Shinjiro's) persona(s) started manifesting and he was made aware of the existence of the Dark Hour and shadows. That same year, a girl named Mitsuru Kirijo invited Akihiko to join SEES - the Specialised Extracurricular Execution Squad - and he accepted. Upon finding out, Shinjiro demanded to join too and the three of them became the original first members of SEES.

Not long after Shinjiro joined SEES, he lost control of his Persona during a mission and accidentally killed a civilian woman. This shocked him to the core and he immediately quit SEES and started living alone on the streets. He cut off most contact with Akihiko and Mitsuru, basically dropped out of school, and started taking drugs that suppressed his Persona and kept it from going out of control.

The main storyline of Persona 3 begins a year and a half after Shinjiro leaves. Between Shinjiro's departure and throughout the first half of the game, it's made clear that Akihiko has repeatedly tried to convince Shinjiro to rejoin SEES, all to no avail. It isn't until he finds out that Ken Amada, the son of the woman he killed two years ago, has joined SEES that Shinjiro finally relents.

Of course, then he gets spirited away to Duplicity, where he’s assigned the role of a Dominant, expected to have sex three times a month, and expected to form a contract within three months time. Because he thinks the entire system is absolute bullshit, he shirks his Dominant responsibilities, refuses to fulfill his bang quota (thus getting sent to re-education), and doesn’t even bother to find someone to talk about contracting with, let alone actually sign a contract. As punishment for failing to comply with the rules, he gets swapped over to being a Submissive and gets all his Dominant rights taken away, not that any of it really bothers him that much. Will he enjoy life in Prismatica more, stay tuned.

PERSONALITY:

Shinjiro is Team SEES’s token tough guy. Rarely smiling, nearly always silent, Shinjiro comes off as very intimidating to those he meets. That impression doesn’t lessen any when he does speak up – his words are clipped and abrupt and blunt to the point of being rude. Telling a person they’re wrong is something he has no difficulty doing and compliments aren’t something he gives lightly, and when he does they’re usually accompanied by an insult or phrased in a backhanded manner. He keeps out of the way of everyone else, always watching and rarely interfering, and he ranks at the bottom of the list when it comes to taking and following orders - ‘do your thing and he’ll do his’ is a sentiment he makes clear multiple times throughout the game. Shinjiro’s a stubborn asshole; good luck trying to get him to do something he doesn’t want. Violence isn’t something he’s inclined towards if he doesn’t have to, but at the same time he has no problem wrecking your shit if you consistently piss him off or do something he doesn’t approve of. And yet despite claiming to be not a nice guy, Shinjiro’s a lot more kind-hearted than he lets on.

He saves the protagonist and his friends from getting beat up by street thugs in a back alley street, despite not knowing who they are or what they want at the time of the event.. After he rejoins SEES, Shinjiro adopts the unofficial role of team mom, handing out towels to those that get caught in a storm and nagging teammates about eating the necessary amount of daily fruits and vegetables. Fuuka even manages to rope him into teaching her how to cook despite his protests and overall grouchiness. Just don’t mention his supposed kindness - he’ll turn red and brush off all compliments. His protective streak shines the brightest around Akihiko, his best friend of 14 years. It’s around Aki that he nags the most, worries the most. The whole reason he even joined SEES in the first place was to keep an eye on Akihiko and make sure the other boy wasn’t doing stupid things. It’s revealed in The Answer that neither Akihiko nor Mitsuru wanted Shinjiro to join for fear that he wouldn’t be able to control his Persona; the fact that he did anyway shows how fiercely protective he is of his friends, going so far as to put their own safety and well-being over his. Humans aren’t the only ones who get his attention; Shinjiro’s even more attentive to dogs than he is of humans. He spoils Koromaru constantly, even going so far as to buy high-end expensive dog food with his money (despite being fairly poor himself).

And he’s not only thoughtful of the people he considers friends. In the female main character’s (FeMC) social link with Shinjiro, he mentions doesn’t much frequent coffeeshops any longer because he feels bad making the employees and patrons listen to his coughing all day long. Shinjiro’s very aware of the world around him, largely because he’s always paying attention to other people. It kind of sucks then that he doesn’t pay much attention to himself and his own problems.

Once upon a time, Shinjiro was a fairly normal teenage kid. Then he discovered Personas and the Dark Hour, and ended up killing a civilian woman when he lost control of his Persona, and that’s the major turning point in Shinjiro’s life that transforms him from a decent, if somewhat rebellious, kid into a walking bucket of self-loathing and guilt. It’s from that moment that he stops believing that he’s a person worth anyone else’s time and attention, starts distancing himself from others, and starts taking Persona suppressant drugs despite knowing that they’ll eventually kill him - or maybe because he knows they’ll kill him. Try as he might he can’t forget what happened that night, no matter how much he runs from it or tries to erase it from his mind, and it eats away at him constantly. Throughout the game Shinjiro rebukes Akihiko for clinging to the past and constantly trying to gain more power so he can make up for what happened in the past, but it’s a fairly hypocritical statement considering Shinjiro himself isn’t able to let go of his mistakes in the past.

It’s definitely something he’s begun to work on during his time in Duplicity, though as with any major life change it’ll be a long, long time before his self-esteem hovers anywhere in the positives. But he has at least begun to accept the idea of moving forward, even if it's a much more difficult thing to do in practice. Forced contact and intimacy with others have also loosened him up a little around strangers; he’s not nearly as uncooperative around strangers as he used to be, and he's a bit more ready to give in to the requests of friends. Largely though, he hasn’t changed too much from who he was originally: a foul-mouthed boy who cares more about his friends than he lets on.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Shinjiro is part of a select group of people who can summon Personas, which are physical manifestations of one's positive personality that can be used to fight Shadows, which are in turn manifestations of the lesser-desired and more malevolent personality traits. Personas are generally summoned using evokers, silver objects with a gun-like appearance. All Personas belong to an Arcana, which dictates to an extent what their strengths, weaknesses, and resistances are. In Persona 3, Personas are only shown summoned during the Dark Hour, a time period immediately after midnight that only a few people can experience; however, as of Persona 4, it’s revealed that Personas can be summoned regularly at any time of the day so long as an evoker is used.

Shinjiro’s Persona, Castor, is of the Hierophant Arcana, which means it is not weak to any particular type of attack but also is not resistant to any type of attack. Castor’s offensive skillset consists almost entirely of physical attacks (slash and strike attacks), though it’s also capable of a few passive skills including regeneration (returns a little HP to Shinjiro each turn) and counter (deflects physical attacks). Castor’s physical attacks are extremely powerful, a reflection of Shinjiro’s own physical strength.

Since Personas are a reflection of one’s inner self, control over one’s Persona is thus heavily reliant on how strong-willed a person is and how much resolve they have. Shinjiro does not have complete control over his Persona and thus takes special drugs to help him control and suppress it.
